The dog days of December

October 2005: My husband, Brian, and I have just adopted a dog. A 10-month-old Labrador retriever. A floppy-eared, sock-chewing ball of rambunctious curiosity. We name her Chloe. Our first day with her, Brian, who loves Christmas more than anyone except maybe Santa Claus, talks about getting her a stocking and putting her picture on our holiday
