Are All Dog Training Schools Created Equal?

All dog training schools are not created equal! Printing flyers and claiming to be a dog trainer does guarantee a responsible trainer. There are no legal requirements for dog trainers so the onus is on you, the owner, to ensure that your dog or puppy is enrolled in a good obedience training school.

How do you know if the claims made by dog training schools are reliable? Let's start by understanding who trains dogs and how. 'Obedience instructors' are people who have qualifications in dog training. They will teach YOU how to train your dog rather than teaching your pet to obey you.

'Dog trainers' are people who train dogs to obey and teach people how to command their pets to listen to their instructions. A 'behavior consultant' is an individual who has experience in observing dogs and interpreting their behavior. They also know how to correct maladaptive behavior in your dog. They may or may not be a part of regular dog training schools.

Other dog training schools are run by members of The National Association of Dog Obedience Instructors. This organization of members provides certification for instructors at a variety of competencies. The Association of Pet Dog Trainers is an organization of trainers that trains pet dogs and helps owners solve problems with their dogs.

Dog training schools may offer either group classes or private lessons or both. It is up to the owner to decide which situation suits him and his personality best.

So where can you find dog training schools? You can ask your local veterinarian, dog breeder, animal rescue or shelters, your dog's groomer, or even the local pet store to recommend a good trainer. It may be a good idea to ask other pet owners in the area for a personal referral.

Before you enroll your dog in classes, make an appointment with instructors from your shortlist of dog training schools and ask him or her to explain the training methods and techniques used. Ask your trainer what his skills, experience, and credentials are. A good guide to training methods is to ask about how the dogs are taught to sit. Avoid any methods that 'force' the dog into position.

Ask about the Canine Good Citizen test. This is the American Kennel Club Canine Good Citizen evaluation of the dog's potential to implement basic good manners and obedience. Dog training schools should be familiar with it and recommend it to pet owners who take their classes.

In closing, make sure to observe at least four classes before making a choice about dog training schools. Once you find the right school, your dog is on his way to becoming an obedient best friend.
