Techniques for House Training a Dog
House training a dog does not have to be an ordeal. New puppy owners may not know it, but there are actually three types of house training. Basic house training entails teaching your dog to understand where he is allowed to go potty.
Submissive wetting is when your dog will urinate when he is disciplined, when he is greeting people and when he is very excited. House training a dog needs to take this sort of behavior in hand too. When dogs reach puberty they need to be trained not to mark their territories in the house.

Before you begin house training a dog, take him or her for an examination at the vet. Certain medical conditions can make house training more complicated. If your dog has parasites, a stomach complaint or urinary tract infections he may not be able to learn properly.
Next, create a 'toilet' area outside that you will use for house training a dog. This can be an area of the backyard - just make sure it is the only area you use. Next create a plan. This plan should include regular times in which you will take your dog outside and a time at which your dog will go to bed or wake up.
When house training a dog never free-feed him until he has learned to answer the call of nature outside. Don't feed snacks or treats that may cause a tummy upset. If your dog is very young make sure you allow him plenty of naps throughout the day and take him out as soon as he wakes up.
If your dog gets very excited, scared or worked up take him to the designated toilet area immediately and allow him to relieve himself. Most dogs can learn this routine in as few as two to three days. Keeping a close watch on your dog and his habits and this will make life easier for both of you.
